Joining as a Graduate Student
Quantum information science is a rapidly growing field, actively funded by governments worldwide, and there is a high demand for young scientists with strong theoretical backgrounds. We provide full support in training such researchers and assisting them in building successful careers.
We seek highly motivated students who are eager to tackle fundamental theoretical challenges, committed to making impactful scientific achievements, and dedicated to advancing quantum science and technology over the long term. We collaborate with leading research institutes in Austria, the UK, the US, Canada, South Korea, China, and beyond, and we also encourage students to engage in these international research efforts.
We accept graduate students from Japan and abroad through Master’s and Doctoral Programs at the Department of Computer Science, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology, The University of Tokyo. Applicants are expected to be able to take and pass the entrance exam, which covers the basics of computer science. Details of the admissions process can be found on the department's webpage and the school’s webpage.
The university and our group provide various financial support opportunities, though full financial support is not guaranteed by default. Information on the university’s financial support can be found on Financial Support for Students. Additionally, funding opportunities within our group may be available depending on our funding situation, and we also assist students in applying for scholarships and fellowships.
For students from abroad, various additional funding options, such as the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship, are available, with details provided on Study in Japan. Domestic scholarships in each student’s home country may also be viable funding options. Obtaining a scholarship is not mandatory for self-funded students.
Students from abroad can also join us as postgraduate international research students, even if additional preparation time is needed for the entrance exam, whether supported by the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship or self-funded. This is a non-degree program designed for those preparing for the entrance exam for the Master’s and Doctoral Programs, typically for one year, with details available on the school's webpage. During this period, postgraduate international research students can also learn Japanese to support their daily lives. However, acceptance into this program does not automatically guarantee admission to a Master’s or Doctoral Program, as passing the entrance exam is still required. We also assist students in preparing for the entrance exam. Joining us as a postgraduate international research student is not mandatory for applicants who can directly pass the entrance exam.
If you are interested in joining our group as a graduate student, please feel free to contact me via Contact with your curriculum vitae (CV) and a brief statement of your research interests attached, reflecting what you have learned about our research, so we can discuss the best options.
